Building a math community starts with you.
We are sharing our love of mathematics.
The Real Deal is a newsletter written for kids who love math by kids (and an occasional grownup) who love math. It is published quarterly. Read the newsletter and enjoy thinking deeply about the ideas we have shared.
The Real Deal Story
“What can we do to continue our math conversations,” I wondered, “now that Math in the Mountains camp is over?” Having the chance to think deeply about real mathematics with other 11-year-olds (and some exceptional teachers) made math camp exciting, but there isn’t an easy way for us to collaborate when we are not at camp together.
With that, I imagined a new kind of publication: a math newsletter written by children (and the occasional adult) for children. This newsletter gives us a chance to continue to have math conversations when we are not together. It allows new voices to join that conversation. It also provides an avenue for children who love mathematics to realize that there is a broader community of other children out there who love mathematics just as much as they do. We might not be able to be together in the mountains of math camp, but we can unite here, in this newsletter, and dream deeply of mathematics.
I plan to publish the newsletter four times each year. Each section of this newsletter has a distinct purpose and a distinct author: we will host a column on open problems, a column on fun competition-style problems, a book review, a column on grownups who have pursued math-adjacent careers, a column on mathematics and art. If you wish to write for this newsletter, I would welcome a conversation with you. You can reach me, James Rogers, via email at therealdealmath@gmail.com.
Please share this newsletter with your friends, family and most importantly, other children who love mathematics.
